Fan remake of a classic game

The Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall Unity is a free-to-play role-playing game from the Daggerfall Workshop. This is a remake of the classic fantasy game by Bethesda Softworks, The Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall. Despite being a fan-made project, this entirely rebuilds the once MS DOS-only game Daggerfall using the Unity engine and runs with minimal issues.

Retaining the revolutionary features of the 1996 original, The Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall Unity offers a wide range of actions that parallel its much later entries, such as The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. Enjoy improved graphics, remastered audio quality, and full modding support.

Return to Tamriel and serve Daggerfall

The Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall Unity has the players return to the fictional continent of Tamriel, particularly the regions of Hammerfell and High Rock as you follow questlines in any order you wish. Its 1996 incarnation already has 15,000 locations, a non-linear open-world RPG experience, and multiple endings — all included here. Also, it’s perfectly free and legal to use, thanks to Bethesda turning the original into freeware in 2009.

Changes in this version include remastered graphics that retain a similar aesthetic to the original. While animations are smoother and textures are in a higher resolution, it retains the models and general art style of the original Daggerfall, making it visually intuitive to players. Another key feature is that this remake comes with full modding support, allowing the community to make changes or add content to the game.

Like the original, the largest roadblock for new players is the massive amount of content available. It only introduces a bit of the world to the player and leaves them to explore the world on their own. This means that a lot of secrets, equipment, spells, and alternative story elements must be located, often only with the most minimal clues available.

A massive treat to fans of the franchise

As The Elder Scrolls fanbase waits for the sixth mainline entry, going back to the classics with this remade The Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall Unity is a good choice. It allows players to experience the story and content of the 1996 original but with updated graphics and improved audio quality. While the same learning curves for new players remain, this is definitely a welcome update to a classic RPG.

PROS

  • Remasters the graphics via Unity
